Effective Friday, August 6th: Masks are required for everyone indoors in all County buildings, regardless of vaccination status. 

Over 20 miles of year-round trails are the prime attraction at the "Adirondacks of Central New York." The oldest county park contains more than six square miles of rugged forest terrain detailed in free maps available at Skyline Lodge. 

An interactive trail map can now be downloaded to your mobile device using Maprika. Among other features, this free app allows you to locate friends anywhere in the park and track your route. Once you download the app in the Apple Store or Google Play, download the map here

  • Cross-Country Skiing

    Cross-Country Skiing

    Highland boasts 40 miles of cross-country ski trails, 20 of which are groomed and track-set for all ability levels, and 3 skate ski loops. It is the ideal place for skiers, snowshoers and hikers who are looking to experience the pristine nature that Southern Onondaga County has to offer.     Dogs must be a 6 ft. leash and remain on hiking trails. They must be under control at all times, inoculated for rabies and never left unattended.

    Pioneer Museum
    Discover the unique history of Highland Forest and Fabius through an array of photographs and artifacts. Open June - August, Saturday & Sunday, 1-4pm. Free admission.  The museum is operated by the Fabius Historical Society. 

  • Horseback Riding

    Horseback Riding

    Horseback trails are open May 1 - October 31. Explore Highland Forest on specially designated horseback trails. All riders must register in the Skyline Lodge, fill out an equestrian permit, be prepared to show Coggins Papers and pay the $3 daily park admission or purchase a $25 horseback riding pass (good for unlimited use for 1 year, within season, and includes entry gate access.) All riders must use the Highland Forest Horseback Riding Map. For details, parking and gate information, call the office at (315) 683-5550.

    Horseback Rides
    Enjoy an outing on horseback at Highland Forest. Rides provided by Highland Outfitters, are $35 per person per hour, available for ages 5 & up and are by appointment only, call (315) 289-3775.

    • Bow/Deer Hunting is permitted in the Fall while Turkey Hunting is allowed in the Spring at Highland Forest. Purchase of a season hunting pass is required.
    • New in 2021, Highland Forest Hunting Passes can be purchased online beginning one month before season opening date. Click here for more information.
    • All passes purchased will need to be picked up at Highland Forest's Skyline Lodge. Lodge hours are currently 10:00am-3:00pm, Tuesday-Sunday. Hunters will need to supply vehicle information and present hunting license.

  • Mountain Biking

    Mountain Biking

    Mountain Biking trails are open May 1 - September 30. There is no better place to give your bike a workout than on the 20 miles of trails at the "Adirondacks of Central New York." Highland offers a mix of country road, mountain trail and backwoods adventure while opportunities for Off-Road Bicycling can be found on park roads and on fire lanes.     Enjoy a picturesque 20 minute sleigh (or hay) ride through the Highland Forest's winter woods.

    There is no charge to use the sledding hill which is 300'. Please note: The sledding hill is not supervised.

    Highland Forest trails offers all levels of snowshoers a chance to enjoy the forest on 6 trails of varying lengths: .5 miles to 8. 7 miles. Snowshoes are rented daily during park hours, conditions permitting, for $10; $5 (15 & under.) 

    Daily Admission: $3 per person

Some of the trails at Highland Forest are part of the Finger Lakes Trail which begins at the Pennsylvania -New York border in Allegany State Park and continues to the Long Path in the Catskill Preserve.

Park Passes

All customers will need to supply vehicle information (make, model, license), hunters will also need to provide proof of hunting license, to Highland Forest staff when picking up pass.

    •Purchased a cross- country ski or an annual pass in 2020-21
    •Reserved a shelter in any county park or youth group camping site at Highland
    •Placed a reservation to visit the zoo this past year
    •Sent your child to Camp Beaver Lake
    If you are unsure if you have an account, don’t remember your password or never set one up, click “Reset Password” then enter your email address. If you do have an account, you will receive an email to reset your password. If you don’t have an account, then go back to the Sign In Page/Screen.
  • Step 2 - Create Account. If you don't have an account, click the purple Create Account button. CreateAccountHF
  • Step 3 - Create Your Family Profile. Enter your information. If you do not need to add any family members, go to next section, Purchase a Highland Forest Pass.
  • Step 4 - Add ALL Family Members who will be getting a pass - The birth date is needed to determine the age category but NOT grade or school. You can add as many family members as needed. Once all family members have been added you are ready to begin your purchase.

  • Step 1 – Click on Highland Forest Passes on the black bar ( if you are on a mobile device you may have to click on the three white lines for the menu)
  • Step 2 – Click the green Search button to open all the pass options (or click the + sign next to the type of pass you are buying) and click the blue Purchase button corresponding to the pass(es) you wish to purchase. Please note: Passes are available beginning one month before each season opens.PurchaseHFPass3
  • Step 3 – Sign In, if you are not already signed in.
  • Step 4 - Choose Family Members- Select all family members who are purchasing a pass. Click Next.  (If you don't see all family members listed, it means you need to add them to your account. You can do this by clicking on the Family Members button on your account page.)
  • Step 5 – Waivers and Agreements – You are required to check the box that you agree to the Highland Forest Waiver to continue. Click “View Agreement” to review the rules & regulations of the pass you are purchasing. You must also enter your name where indicated. Click “Next.”
  • Step 6 - Review and Submit – Make sure you are purchasing the correct pass(es), for the correct family members. If correct, click Add To Cart. If not, click Previous to make changes.
  • Step 7 - Shopping Cart – Click Checkout.

Once you have completed your purchase, you will receive an email with your receipt. (You can also check your Account History and click on Payments for your receipt.) Please present this receipt, either printed or on your mobile device, to the Highland Forest staff upon your arrival at the park to receive your pass. You will also be asked to supply your vehicle information. If this purchase is for a Hunting Pass, you will be required to show proof of hunting license as well.

IMPORTANT: PASSES WILL NOT BE MAILED, you must go to Highland to pick up. Highland Forest Office Hours are currently 10:00am-3:00pm, Tuesday-Sunday. Subject to change.
